das dod in meiner blog-url hab ich ja nur genommen, weil alle anderen subdomains schon belegt waren, als ich es eingerichtet habe. es sollte wohl eine abkürzung für etwas sein, was ich aber dann vergessen habe. ich bin jetzt am rumprobieren, was mir alles dazu einfällt und rotiere mal ein paar titel, die ich hier mal protokollieren werde oder so.

disillusioned of distraction - Juli 2004 distribution of doubt - ?

Bin schon seit anderthalb Wochen wieder in Berlin. Hab mir den Plan von Manhattan über den Schreibtisch gehängt. Ich bin also jetzt auch eine dieser Deutschen, die Manhattan begeistert ist. Es war dort voll von deutschen Künstlern. Der einzige Trost ist, dass die ganzen amerikanischen Intellektuellen alle Berlin-verrückt sind. Für A. nehme ich jetzt eine CD mit Berlin Liedern auf. Hier die Liste, mit den Kommentaren, die ich ihr geschickt habe.

Totally eclectic and kind of chronological Berlin mix

1. Jennifer Warnes - First We Take Manhattan [1987] I found this nice for the beginning as it says "First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin" describes your move a bit, doesn't it? Anyway this is an old Leonard Cohen song which he wrote for Jennifer Warnes in the 70s but she did a new version for her record "Famous Blue Raincoat" 1987 where she did cover versions of other Leonard Cohen songs.

2. Kurt Weill - Lied von der Unzulanglichkeit des Menschlichen Strebens (1929 Version) This is from Bertold Brechts Dreigroschenoper, I'm not sure who the singer is. 3. Marlene Dietrich - Du hast ja keine Ahnung wie schön du bist Berlin [1964] What would a Berlin mix be without Marlene Dietrich? She came back here when she died and her documents and stuff can be visited in the Filmmuseum .

4. Edith Piaf - L'homme de Berlin [1963] OK, this not strictly about Berlin, but about this guy from Berlin running around in Paris. My French is really bad but I liked this passage: Ne me parlez pas de hasard, De ciel, ni de fatalité, De prochains retours, ni d'espoir, De destin, ni d'éternité. Ne me parlez pas de Berlin

5. LOU REED - Berlin [1973] I liked the contrast between this kind of menacing beginning of this crowd bellowing the birthday song and the melancholy second part: "We were in a small café / You could hear the guitars play" just two lines but able to evoke an atmosphere.

6. Ton Steine Scherben - Rauch Haus Song [1972] "Der Mariannenplatz war blau, soviel Bullen waren da ..." this is how this song starts. It describes of the first squattings in Berlin: the former Bethanien hospital. Today the building is used by the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, the Kunstamt Kreuzberg and other communal organizations. Ton Steine Scherben is a famous political band from the 70s that had a big influence on German rock music until the 80s. The lead singer Rio Reiser died a few years ago of Aids.

7. Ton Steine Scherben - Keine Macht für Niemand [1973]

Ich bin nicht frei und kann nur wählen, welche Diebe mich bestehlen, welche Mörder mir befehlen. Ich bin tausendmal verblutet und sie ham mich vergessen. Ich bin tausendmal verhungert und sie war'n vollgefressen.

7. Einstürzende Neubauten - Krieg in den Städten [1980] One of the early pieces of Einstürzende Neubauten who started out using tools like percussion drills or chain saws for making music. They later of course became one of the most important 80s art rock formations. Blixa Bargeld later played with Nick Cave's Bad Seeds. The Neubauten are still around I think - they just published a new album called "Perpetuum Mobile". Don't know if it is any good.

8. Ideal - Berlin [1980] Ideal is one of the main band of the "Neue Deutsche Welle" (German New Wave) movements that was popular in the first half of the 80s. Loads of bands started to sing songs in German which was totally uncool til then. This song is about Berlin and describes the singers journey from Bahnhof Zoo to Kreuzberg.

9. Mia - Heroes [2003] Coverversion of David Bowie's Heroes. Mia is one of the new band that are kind of reviving the 80s NDW spirit. They are very leftist and played at the 1. May demonstration in front of the Volksbühne-Theater. I was there and one of the organizers was wearing this t-shirt saying "Living la vida loca" allthewhile reading this totally boring speech about revolution and equity all completely serious. It was a funny contrast.

10. Wir Sind Helden - Guten Tag [2003] Another one of the 80s revival bands. But very groovy and nice lyrics. "Guten Tag, ich will mein Leben zurück Guten Tag, guten Tag, ich will mein Leben zurück Guten Tag, guten Tag, ich will mein Leben zurück Guten Tag, ich gebe zu, ich war am Anfang entzückt Aber euer Leben zwickt und drückt nur dann nicht, wenn man sich bückt"

11. 2raumwohnung - Wir trafen uns in einem Garten [2000] One of the Humpe-sisters who were starting to make music already in the 80s (the other one was the singer of Ideal which you heard two songs before). Inga Humpe had a big comeback with 2raumwohnung. For some reason they are more popular in Eastern Germany although she is definitely from West-Berlin.

12. Paula - Als Es Passierte One hit wonder in the Berlin alternative music scene. I think the singer lives just around the corner where I live. I see her all the time. Nevertheless I really like the song.

13. Britta - Wir müssen hier raus [2003] This song is originally from "Ton Steine Scherben" (I kinda re-discovered them ;). Britta is a all female band from Kreuzberg. Christiane Rösinger is one of the fixed points of the Berlin nightlife and music scene.

14. Gonzales - Lets Groove Again [2000] OK, now we move to the elektro guys. Gonzales is a prankster musician who came to Berlin in the 90s. Originally he is from Canada but only became popular here. Brilliant performer and really funny.

15. Peaches - Set It Off [2002] Peaches is in the same crowd as Gonzales. Sometimes they perform together. She is also from Canada where she worked as a Kindergarden teacher or something. Hard to believe if you see one of her performances where she plays with gender images and represents this mega sex bitch. Her shows are really really great. You should catch one if you haven't already.

16. Chicks on Speed - Eurotrash girl To bring in a bit of a European perspective. I guess you can find some Eurotrash girls in Berlin, too. And I think travelling between locations and not really having a place where you are is a phenomenon today.

17. Ellen Allien - stadtkind [2001] One of the few women in techno. This piece is about her connection to Berlin, how the city gives her strength.

18. Pole - Berlin For the end some feeps and bleeps. Pole is a Berlin based electronic musician who works on a pretty minimal level but still manages to make some really beautiful relaxing tunes.

19. Cosmic Baby - Herbst in Berlin [1994] Cosmic baby is normally a Trance DJ who is known for his dance tunes. He is a academically trained musician which is noticable here. "Autumn in Berlin" is a Nyman'esk, relaxing piece.
